Self-Determination

Well, this title may sound edgy for the purpose of this post… Namely to say that I give up on canteen food and want to try preparing my own food instead. Nevertheless, this seems to be one big step forward to me – cut costs to accumulate capital, better control over what I eat and prevent myself from going too lazy.

Firstly what’s the cost incurred? It’s not a very definite thing to say, but I’ll try. Besides the non-stick pan and cutleries I brought over from Penang or bought in Singapore, I spent S$134.60 to obtain the following (not exhaustive listing):

  • Zojirushi’s Mr Bento tiffin carrier
  • An 1.0-liter rice cooker
  • Naturel sunflower seed oil, 1kg
  • Kikkoman soy sauce, 500ml
  • A week’s worth of foodstuff (vegetables, tofu, eggs, 20 pieces of hash brown, bread and spread, salt etc.) – some of these last longer… I don’t think I am able to consume a packet of salt in a week :P

All these seems good enough for me. As of time for preparing meals, I think I have more than enough (I still have time to blog, online etc., and I don’t have time to prepare one of my life’s necessities!?). Let’s see how this work out over the next week… I hope it will not fail.

I want to mention something special: The Mr Bento. It’s special in this ‘project’ not because of its extravagant price, but due to the role it plays: Source of motivation, greater mobilization, so forth. This is the package (no advertising btw):

Complete with a chopstick and user’s manual. Quality is as expected from a Japanese company, although this one is made in Thailand.

The main rice container, holds 450ml.

The leak-proof soup container, holds 280ml. The valve (the little white dot on the center of the cover) is for releasing ‘water vapor pressure’ (not chemistry) to the surrounding and helps keep other containers warm.

The dish containers. The large one (right) holds 300ml while the small one holds 200ml.

The outer container, which interior is coated with Teflon and exterior made of stainless steel.

Close-up look of the chopsticks and its dedicated container. Looks like a pencil box.

Fully packed Mr Bento. It’s just like a large water bottle, like the one I use currently.

Just think of what the containers can hold makes my mouth water :P

What’s ’secondly’ then? As I’ve said, let’s see for the time being…
